Room 109 News…

A special “Toast” to Demeter!! Thank you for the amazing harvest and seasons!

Hello Room 109 Families! We had an excellent week together! This is what we have been up to! Our Myths this week included: Daughter of the Seasons..Persephone & Demeter-We discovered this myth explains the reasons for our seasons!! Some of the symbolism we discussed is…The changing of the seasons directly mirror Persephone’s presence and absence. Mother-Daughter Bond-It highlights the powerful, protective love between Mother and Daughter. We had a harvest feast and created a chapter summary with this myth. Our Harvest Feast included: Wine (Sparkling Grape Juice), Feta Cheese, Pita Bread, Olives, Honey and Grapes.

Create the other half of the Goblet…Can you make it symmetrical?

King Midas and The Golden Touch...We explored this myth during our unit on The Chocolate Touch so we knew a little about what to expect. The myth of King Midas teaches that greed is destructive, true happiness isn’t found in material wealth, and it’s crucial to appreciate simple joys and loved ones over riches, as Midas’s wish to turn everything to gold backfired, making him unable to eat or even touch his daughter, turning love into sorrow. Key lessons include being careful what you wish for, understanding that power and wealth have costs, and recognizing the dangers of unchecked desire.

Multiplicity Math…

Attack of the Aloadae is…

The myth of the Aloadae giants (Ephialtes and Otos) from Greek mythology features two brothers who fight against the gods and each other. They attempted to storm Olympus by piling mountains, but Artemis tricked them into killing each other with their own spears by dashing between them in the form of a deer. We are creating a triangular diorama of our favorite scene in this myth…Stay tuned for our final product!

Our special tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and his Dream…“My hand-prints build a bridge so wide, Where friends can cross from side to side, With caring hands and hearts so true, We share the kindness Dr. King knew!”

Room 109 News…

Our classes collaborated to create this amazing mythical masterpiece!

Hello Room 109 Families!

We have had an incredibly busy week together! Here is what we have been up to…We are LOVING our Greek Myths! So far in our book, Greeking Out, we have read “The Olympians Versus The Titans”, The Fire, The Jar, and The Very First Humans”, The Flying Stallion, A Fearless Mortal, And a Feisty Fly”, “The Reflection and The Voice. We are enjoying learning about all the different characters in Greek Mythology! Our projects this week included: Creating a Greek Mythology Family Tree which we will continue to add to throughout our studies, Pandora’s Box Clay creation and writing and currently working on a collaborative project with Ms. Melissa’s Class with Pegasus! We are being introduced to new vocabulary and important lessons these myths teach us!

Our Greek Mythology Family Tree!! We will continue to add characters as we explore!

Pandora’s Box…Lessons Learned: 🎁

Curiosity & Temptation: Don’t let curiosity lead to destructive actions; sometimes, it’s best to leave the unknown alone.

Consequences of Actions: Unthinking actions (like opening the box) have far-reaching negative consequences for everyone.

Inescapable Suffering: Life includes evils like pain, disease, and sorrow, which are part of the human condition.

The Power of Hope: Even after releasing all evils, hope (represented by the single entity remaining in the jar) stays behind, giving humans strength to persevere.

Responsibility: The story highlights the need for caution and responsibility, especially in innovations, as actions can have unforeseen impacts.

Pandora’s Box Journal Prompt…🎁

We created our Pandora’s Boxes using clay, beads, jewels, tools, rocks, glitter and paint! Inside we created little scrolls of ideas that we want locked up forever-things that bother us in our own world! Please discuss with your child what your child chose! Here is the list our class brainstormed together…Meanness, Sickness, Exclusion, Fighting, Death, Guns, Cruelty to animals, Rumors, Lack of Trust, Sins and Abuse.❤
Our final products….Remember…”Don’t Open Pandora’s Box” 🫢

What did our grid reveal? Which God/Goddess would need this? 🔱

The Reflection And The Voice…The Greek Myth of Echo and Narcissus. Lessons from Narcissus include:

  • Dangers of Vanity & Self-Obsession: Narcissus’s downfall is the ultimate warning against extreme self-love, showing how obsession with one’s own image (or self) leads to a loss of self and inability to connect with others.
  • The “Know Thyself” Paradox: A prophecy stated he would live long if he never knew himself; his eventual self-knowledge (seeing his reflection) led to his tragic end, suggesting true self-knowledge can be destructive if it’s just vanity, not wisdom.
  • Cruelty & Lack of Empathy: His rejection of Echo and others demonstrates how self-centeredness can make one cruel and blind to the needs and affections of others.

Lessons from Echo

Codependency: Her desperate, unfulfilled love for Narcissus shows the destructive nature of being hyper-focused on someone else, leading to her withering away until only her voice remained.

Consequences of Gossip/Dishonesty: Echo was cursed for distracting Hera, teaching a lesson against idle talk or deceit, but her story goes deeper.

Loss of Identity: Her curse, forcing her to only repeat others’ words, symbolizes the loss of self, voice, and individuality when one becomes completely defined by another person.

Creating Daffodils! We discovered that a Daffodil symbolizes Narcissus’s Death as the God’s replaced his body after death with many Daffodils. Nature’s Explanation: It provides a mythical explanation for the natural phenomenon of an echo and the origin of the narcissus flower. **✿❀ ❀✿**

The Flying Stallion, A Fearless Mortal, And A Feisty Fly!!…The Myth of Bellerophon and Pegasus 🪽

Mindset Math-Dozens of Dice! This lesson focuses on developing strategies for counting equal groups by rolling many dice and counting the dots. We connected these strategies to multiplication!🎲

Mindset Math! Playing with Pairs…We are learning to develop ways of illustrating multiplication and look for patterns that emerge while investigating the puzzle: Two numbers add up to 10. What might you get if you multiply these numbers? The vocabulary words Sum and Product were discovered as well! 🎲🎲

Some ideas from our activity…Great work Room 109!

Multiplicity Math…Our guiding questions below!

Are there more green squares or orange squares?
How do you know?
How did you see it?
How could you figure it out?
Presentations from classmates who used choice time to develop a proud project! We asked questions and worked on giving specific, positive feedback! 🤩
Indoor Recess Fun! We love spending time with Ms. Melissa’s Class! Building, Creating and even a special treat..watching Hercules! 🪅
Ms. Beth’s Class developed a “What Are You READING?” wall! Sooo….we added what we are currently reading independently at home or during our class independent silent reading time! It’s fun to see what everyone is reading these days! It may give us some other good ideas for literature to check out! 💚

Amazing Art with Ms. Andrea!🎨

We had a great time with our new Art Teacher…Ms. Andrea! Our first project is below…Ask your child what different tools he/she used to create these beautiful masterpieces!

Final Project!

We created New Year’s Eve Disco Balls along with writing to the prompt of In 2026, I will….Prior to this activity, we discussed the word “Resolution”and how it applies to us! We had a good discussion of what promises we would like to keep to our families, ourselves and our classroom. Please ask your child to talk with your about his/her resolutions for 2026!

Greek Mythology…

We began our new unit of study this week! Room 109 was thrilled to hear that we will be experiencing Greek Mythology together! We brainstormed about what we thought a Myth was…Here is what we shared so far…It could be a mythical tale, not real or fake in some way and teaches us a moral or lesson. Not bad Room 109! We are creating a flip book within our writing journals where we will be recording our thoughts and connections! Our main source of information is the book Greeking Out: Epic Retellings of Classic Greek Myths! Our first Greek Myth is “The Olympians Vs The Titans”. After completion of this read-aloud we worked on our story maps which included the following: Important Events (Beginning, Middle, End) What are you thinking so far? Who is your favorite character? Why? How are the characters trying to solve the problem? What did the characters learn about themselves? The message of the myth? How many stars would you give it?

Creating & Writing in our Flip Book Journals!

We are in the process of designing a Greek Mythology Family Tree! Each child chose an important person that is relative to what we are currently studying in our myths. We will continue to build on to this tree as we move forward through our unit.

Learning to illustrate our Greek God/Goddess!

Room 109 News…

Hello Room 109 Families! We have had a very JOYFUL week together here at Plato! Here is what we have been up to! We are working on our culminating project for the novel: The Chocolate Touch! Each student chose a scene and connected it to one of our book’s main themes: Gratitude, Selfish, Greed and Moderation is Key! They each will be creating this scene in their own Diorama and writing a summary including the chosen scene and its significance to the story. Key characters will be present in the Diorama using chosen materials from our classroom and Art closet! We will be presenting our amazing masterpieces next Monday to other classes!

King Midas and The Golden Touch! 👑🪙

We watched a video story of the myth, Kind Midas and The Golden Touch. We noticed there were many similarities between our novel The Chocolate Touch and the myth King Midas and The Golden Touch. In groups we discussed King Midas and his traits before “The Golden Touch”, start of “The Golden Touch”, the middle of “The Golden Touch” and “The end of “The Golden Touch.” We also created a Venn Diagram between the two stories! Please ask your child about what he/she noticed!

We have our parts for our Reader’s Theater: King Midas and The Golden Touch-A Greek Myth!. Research shows that Reader’s Theater helps boosts fluency (smooth reading with expression), comprehension (deeper understanding of story/characters), confidence (less fear reading aloud), vocabulary, and teamwork, all while making reading fun through performance, repetition, and character exploration, meeting many literacy standards. We will be creating costume and props for our performance in other classrooms next week! Please ask your child which character and/or part he/she is reading! 🎭

Multiplicity Lab Math…We looked at two interesting photos! These are questions that helped to guide us through a deeper understanding of the picture! (Hexagon with Star for reference) 🌟

What patterns do you see?

How do you see them?

What shapes do you see?

How do shapes or lines repeat?

This picture shows things that could be skip counted. (Picture of LEGOs)
What could you skip count in this image? How would you do it?

Where can you find things that could be skip counted in your world? (Guiding Questions)
You can take a picture, make a sketch, or bring objects to show.
Bring back at least one example of something that could be skip counted. We each explored our classroom to find something and we illustrated/wrote in our journal what it is and what we skip counted by to find our number.

Project for Parents! 🎄

Today your child brought home a special holiday gift he/she created for you! It is up to you and your child if it should be opened before Christmas or placed under the tree! Enjoy! We loved being little elves!

Room 109 News…

Hello Room 109 Families!

We have had a wonderful week together! Here is what we have been up to…

With Thanksgiving right around the corner we shifted our focus to the word Gratitude and what that means to all of us! We discussed what we are “Thankful” for in our classroom and our lives! We created a special wreath with our painted hand prints and ideas: In Room 109, we are THANKFUL for each other because we are…Inclusive, Kind, Helpful, Respectful, Playful, Laughing, Joyful, Loving, Social and Friendly❤ We created an Acrostic Poem about our wish for Thanksgiving, illustrated that wish and wrote a paragraph using our words in the poem. We also created our Gratitude Jars..Writing everything we are grateful for in our lives!

In other news…The Chocolate Touch! We only have a few more chapters to go in our novel and literature circles! In our writing journals…If you had the power to turn one thing into chocolate, what would it be and why?

John feels frustrated and angry that others don’t understand the problem. Imagine you are one of his classmates watching him at lunch. What are you thinking? What would you do to help him?
Predict…How do you think other people will react when they see John’s “magic” in action, especially after he’s kept it a secret so far?

Book Fair Wishes💫

We enjoyed listening to Ms. Filisa read us the story, The Gift of Words by Peter Reynolds (Author of The Dot!) and writing down our Book Fair list!

The Gift of Words is a holiday picture book by Peter H. Reynolds about a boy named Jerome who discovers that inspirational words are hard to find and instead decides to collect and share positive words from his community. Jerome decorates a bare tree in the park with words of hope, love, and joy, which brings his community together to contribute their own words. The book highlights how kind and positive words can unite people, emphasizing that the gift of words is a powerful, free gift everyone can share.

*Please encourage your child to spend 15-20 minutes reading, playing card games, writing/illustrating in a journal etc. as homework!

Book Bags...Books are taken home by your child on Tuesday or Wednesday of each week. They are to spend time reading independently and also with/to you. When your child finishes the book for the week, he/she may bring it back and hang it on their hook at school. The following week is when I read with each child from the book that was read. After I listen and discuss the book with your child, he/she chooses a new book to bring home!

*Please have your child practice tying shoes at home if he/she is having difficulty. Thank you!

*A reminder that all lunches/snacks need to be nut free. Thank you for your cooperation!

*Please check out Ms. Maria’s Home Notes for important information! Conference sign-up is available. Please sign-up by November 17th!

*Please continue to send a healthy snack & water bottle with your child as we don’t have snacks to give if a child forgets. You may want your child to keep a Plato sweater or sweatshirt at school. At times it can be cooler in our classroom. As the weather begins to change, please make sure your child is prepared to go outside every day for recess. We only stay indoors for extreme weather. A jacket, mittens/gloves and a hat are beginning to become more necessary. You may have your child keep an extra set at school if you wish!

*Please label clothing that is sent to school.*

*Red folders are our designated “Take Home” folder. Be sure to check this folder for important notes and/or work from your child! Please have your child empty the folder each week. It is important for your child to bring this folder back on Mondays. Thank you!!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! I can be reached by my Plato email:

Room 109 News…

Happy Halloween! Boo To You!! 👻

Hello Room 109 Families! We have been busy bees this week!! 🐝 This is what we have been up to…

We kicked off our week together researching Bernie’s Book Bank which is our service project for this year! We discussed the importance of literacy in each of our lives! We discovered through our research, their mission is to: Ensure literacy for children tomorrow by helping to build a library in every home in America today. 🩷

How is Room 109 and our Plato Community helping? We presented our service project to every classroom at Plato! We asked for books to be donated and book marks to be made for the volunteers at Bernie’s Book Bank. On November 4, our class will be traveling to Bernie’s Book Bank to volunteer our time and energy to help in ways needed. We are very excited for the opportunity to help under-served communities. Fun Fact: If a child participates this program from Kindergarten through 6th grade, he/she will have built a library of 96 books! 📚

Working on our presentation posters! We are in the Bernie’s Mission Group, Rules of Bernie’s Book Bank or How Plato Can Help Bernie’s Book Bank!
Counting out bookmarks to give to each class on our visit!
Creating book marks to give to Bernie’s Book Bank for their volunteers!
Taking time to look through each book carefully that was donated to ensure it follows the rules for Bernie’s Book Bank!
Sorting through acceptable and not acceptable books to donate to Bernie’s Book Bank!
Let the presentations begin!! 🤩

Sharing Crackers Lesson…There are 36 crackers to be shared equally for snack. As Partners, we explored how many kids can share the crackers and how many crackers each friend will get, building an understanding of equal groups, division and multiplication! We will continue to explore these questions: What patterns do you notice in the solutions we found? How could we organize what we’ve found to see patterns? Please see below what we have found…
